Notes from the Coach

Howdy!  My name is Kristen Jones and I am proud to introduce myself as a Lonestar Coach. Over the past 15 years I have coached under several amazing high school and collegiate coaches in Lake Worth and Frisco. Currently, I am a middle school coach at Wester Middle School, where we have had multiple undefeated seasons, several D1 athletes, and many more outstanding athletes come through our program. My love of volleyball started when I was in middle school and was predominately a basketball/softball player. I decided to try out, and fell in love with the game. I went on to play volleyball through high school. I then decided to focus on Agriculture at Texas A&M University, WHOOP, and continued to play in leagues both on the court and on sand. I truly believe it is important to keep playing as you get older to be able to keep in perspective what you are asking of your athletes as a coach.

My coaching philosophy is very basic; I will strive to ensure every athlete not only learns fundamental skills, but life lessons along the journey. I believe that a player should be provided with different opportunities to make decisions, both successful and unsuccessful. By providing situations the athletes will make choices and as their coach it is my job to evaluate their performance. By providing feedback, both positive and negative, I will be their guide to make future decisions that will allow the athletes to learn from past mistakes. These lessons will not only be driven from court play, but also everyday situations. In life we must teach our athletes what it means to be a teammate, not only on the court but in jobs, families, and with friends.

If you ask anyone in my family or even my circle of friends, they will tell you that I am the most competitive person they know. I compete for everything, however you must also understand that I know at times there will always be a team better than you. While being on the winning side is my goal, I also feel that it is just as important to learn what it means to give it your all and come up short on the score board. Teaching young athletes to be able to look in the mirror and make the decision that you gave it everything you had or maybe you could have done things differently is a major part of who I am. It is important to be a humble winner, but also a gracious loser. Sportsmanship is an important key to be a player on my team.

I look forward to the upcoming club season. Together as a supportive partnership between Coach, Athlete, and Parents, it will be a season to remember.
